Value Non-Black Support
by Alicia Renee on 07/13/16
Here are a few words I shared via a post last week on my personal Facebook page:
I am strongly and unapologetically of the mind that we should embrace non-black voices that are making sincere efforts to mourn with blacks, express compassion, and lend support. I think often of abolition. I always admired that black abolitionists and white abolitionists worked together to end slavery. It's powerful to me when we as humans enter struggles that we, by virtue of our privilege, could easily choose to ignore. (Wow--I wasn't even going here, but isn't that what Christ did by shedding divine privilege and entering human struggle for the sake of a greater good?) Anyway, I also say this because I don't want my non-black friends to be afraid of offending me with their compassion, lol. I think it's beautiful. And if a teaching opportunity arises, I believe in handling it with gentleness.
Thank you, Savanna Hartman, for your words in your moving video, and thank you to all my friends, black, white, and everything in between who are banding together.
